Functional medicine aims to identify and treat the underlying causes of diseases. Integrative medicine combines the principles of functional medicine with traditional medical practices. While functional medicine is sometimes labeled as "alternative medicine," we believe that merging evidence-based biological and nutritional science with conventional pediatric care is the best kind of medicine.
Nurturing Pediatrics is out-of-network for all insurers, meaning we do not handle insurance claims. This enables us to spend the necessary time to address the root causes of mental health disorders. You can use HSA and FSA cards, and we can issue a receipt for services if needed.
By operating outside the traditional insurance model, Nurturing Pediatrics can devote the time needed to:
Absolutely! Your pediatrician is probably awesome, and we are happy for you to keep that relationship. Our board-certified pediatrician, Dr. Bruce, can work alongside your pediatrician to investigate the root causes of behavioral, mental, attentional, or sleep issues and provide an integrative medicine treatment plan.
Nurturing Pediatrics accepts a limited number of primary care patients annually and adheres to evidence-based practices for checkups, screenings, and vaccinations. After identifying and addressing the root causes of your child's behavioral and mental health issues, we can evaluate if transitioning to our primary care services is appropriate.
We will not stop medications unless it is clinically appropriate and safe. As we work to identify and treat the underlying causes of your child's behavioral, mental, attentional, or sleep challenges, we may modify their medication plan. Our child-specific nutritional, environmental, and/or pharmaceutical treatments will be driven by symptoms and empirical data, customized to your child’s specific needs. At the end of our time working together, your child may be on the same medication(s), different medication(s), or no medication at all.
Yes, we do prescribe medications when necessary. Medications can sometimes be the optimal solution, providing a rapid and effective means to address symptoms and can significantly improve quality of life. Other times medications may not be the best or only answer. Nurturing Pediatrics is committed to moving beyond a universal, symptom-based treatment model to create personalized plans that address each child's unique biological and environmental factors.
We will explore the root causes of your child's behavioral and emotional issues and recommend appropriate treatments. For most children, this will involve some dietary adjustments. Whether prescription medications or supplements are necessary will depend on your child's unique situation. We aim to find solutions that avoid medication when feasible, but sometimes medication or supplements may be the most suitable choice. We will discuss the potential risks and benefits of different treatment options.
